24.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3

Why do photos and videos shot with a Nikon HD-SLR look so good? It all starts with Nikon’s exclusive image sensors, and the D3200 has the most powerful CMOS sensor we've ever put in a HD-SLR at this level. Boasting an astounding 24.2 effective megapixels, it captures sharper, richer images—even in low light. Combine that with EXPEED 3 image processing, the processing power behind the acclaimed Nikon D4, for super-fast operation, exceptional image capture, in-camera filter effects and more. Your photos and videos will amaze even you.

We had previously purchased a D3100 for our daughter. When we looked at replacing our aging Olympus, we thought about buying another 3100 so that we could share lenses while our daughter is still at home. In the meantime, Nikon came out with the 3200. What a nice step upward. The menus are essentially the same. My wife loves the red body which makes it easy to tell ours apart from not only our daughter's but other camaras. It's speed and ease of use are great and it works easily in manual modes.
Overall a great camara for the price.

This is my first time purchasing a DSLR. The Nikon D3200 is all you need as it produces beautiful pictures with beautiful color and sharpness. I'm just an average guy who likes to take both pictures and videos. I am not a professional photographer. All most people will need is the kit lens that comes with this camera and to shoot at the smallest picture size and the lowest quality JPEGs. The photos come out great despite the small size so they quickly can be uploaded to Flickr, Facebook or Picasa, etc. They print well too. No need for 24 megapixels. What makes this camera stand out is the fill flash; that is, when using the flash, this model automatically knows how much flash you need and your pictures come out great. This feature alone makes this camera worth it's money.
I've learned to come out the auto mode and use the program mode which lets the camera do most the things for you.
As for video, well, this type of camera is not the best for that. The quality is good but it can't focus fast enough and the lens makes a lot of noise when doing so. You can press half way down on the shutter and it will refocus and it will automatically adjust for light but this type of camera cannot zoom automatically so it cannot film like a camcorder. The sound is uncompressed which is great, but only in mono. It cannot film at 60 frames at 1920x1080; only at 1280x720. You should always film at 60 frames as it comes out much smoother and later can be edited using software and reduced to 30 frames if you wish.
I've used ultra zoom cameras for years and currently have a Sony HX100V digital camera. It makes great videos but I was disappointed in the photo qualily which produced an "oil painting" like quality when looked at closely.
So, yes, I would highly recommend this camera for photography but I am going to hang on to my Sony ultra zoom for video use. So a low end DSLR for photography and a ultra zoom for videography. That is my recommendation.

While a very amateur, but nevertheless good, photographer I want ease of use, simplicity but quality photos. I stopped using the pro series at the D2. I loved the 40X but it's dated now but I still use one. The D3200 is heavens answer to my photographing desires. It has tons of features that accommodate different sophisticated needs. For the average needs of a non pro like me it lets me access the few features I need most of the time fast and easy. The pictures are great too. The 24mp are nice although unnecessary, just filling up the SD card fast. As a slo mo video lover it gives me 60 fps though I'd prefer 120, but video is relatively easy to activate When in still mode. It handles very well and has a good balance that is important at my level of photography and age (72). I loooooove it

I've only had this camera for a few weeks after a couple of months of research online. I am new to DSLR but have used Nikon D40 before. So this review is for novice. D3200 is a light weight, small camera that packs many features. I use it for my kids primarily. The picture quality is very crisp and clear. The 24mp thing doesn't make much difference to naked eyes, but sure is nice when you need to blow up the pictures to print. We had some portraits done by a photo studio and some pictures look blurry at 12x12. Even with my cheap inkjet printer at home, there's a difference when I print pictures from various sources.

I noticed after a few days that I don't like the color saturation of the pictures. The colors don't "pop". Found out online that D3200 does not saturate the colors as much as other DSLRs in its standard mode. If you like more vivid colors, you have to adjust the image quality under Shooting Menu in one of the manual modes. I cranked up the contrast and saturation in Vivid mode and the colors came out a lot better. Some reviews complain about its tendency to overexpose, I wonder if that's what they're talking about. Kids don't look very good if they look pale.

I also noticed that it performs more like a point-n-shoot camera under indoor low light while using one of the preprogramed settings. The light compensating bulb in the front is very, very bright. As I'm getting more comfortable with the various settings, I find myself moving toward the P, A, S modes. I haven't had time to use it on landscape. I look forward to using it during our trips this fall. I haven't used the video function either. Looks a bit too complicated for me. I've got a point-n-shoot camera for that.
